Detailed description

Svevia has launched industrial-scale production of lignin-based asphalt at its asphalt plant in Läggesta, Strängnäs Municipality, Sweden. On October 6, 2026, the company demonstrated the production process to customers and infrastructure project clients. The new product, Constrada Origo Lignin, uses lignin derived from forest resources to replace part of the fossil-based bitumen traditionally used as an asphalt binder. Production also incorporates recycled asphalt, biofuel and renewable electricity. Following several years of pilot projects and testing, Svevia has upgraded its Läggesta facility with equipment that enables precise lignin dosing and consistent industrial production. According to Svevia, the asphalt provides technical performance equivalent to conventional asphalt and can be used in all layers of road construction. Its environmental impact is documented through a third-party-verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The production technology was developed in cooperation with Benninghoven & Wirtgen Sverige AB and material producer Fibenol. The plant can supply lignin asphalt to road construction and paving projects within approximately 100 kilometres of Läggesta. The initiative marks Svevia's transition from experimental production to industrial-scale manufacturing, supporting broader use of lower-carbon materials in Swedish road infrastructure.
