Detailed description

Swedish transmission system operator Svenska kraftnät has signed a construction contract worth approximately SEK 3.38 billion with Croatian company Dalekovod for the Uppsala Package, a major expansion of the electricity transmission network in the Uppsala region. The contract covers four new transmission lines stretching from Mehedeby in Tierp Municipality to Odensala in Sigtuna Municipality. Construction includes two parallel 400 kV overhead transmission lines spanning approximately 100 kilometres and two parallel 220 kV lines extending around three kilometres. The project also involves dismantling approximately 160 kilometres of existing transmission lines. Much of the new infrastructure will be constructed along existing power line corridors and near the E4 motorway, reducing the need for additional land. The Uppsala Package is part of NordSyd, Svenska kraftnät's major investment programme, involving more than SEK 100 billion in planned investments to strengthen electricity transmission capacity between northern and central Sweden. Construction is preliminarily scheduled to begin in 2026–2027, with the new lines expected to enter operation in stages between 2029 and 2031. Removal of existing 220 kV infrastructure is scheduled to begin in 2027. Three of the four transmission lines have received the required permits from the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate. The Mehedeby–Jälla section is still awaiting a government decision. The investment is intended to improve transmission capacity and support growing electricity demand from housing development, businesses and industrial activity.
