Detailed description

SSAB marked the start of construction of a new quenching line at its steelworks in Oxelösund, Sweden, on October 13, 2026. The SEK 3.3 billion investment is part of the company's strategy to expand its production capacity for advanced high-strength steel products. The new facility will increase production capacity for wear-resistant and protection steels, including products marketed under SSAB's Hardox and Armox brands. Quenching is a heat-treatment process that rapidly cools steel to achieve high hardness and strength. The investment is expected to add approximately 100,000 tonnes of annual production capacity for SSAB Special Steels' most advanced products. Production is scheduled to begin in 2030. The project also forms part of the ongoing transformation of the Oxelösund steelworks, where SSAB is investing in modern, electrified production technology. The groundbreaking ceremony brought together SSAB management, local stakeholders and decision-makers, marking the project's transition from planning to execution. According to SSAB, the new quenching line will strengthen its ability to supply advanced steel products for demanding industrial applications, as well as safety- and defense-related uses.
