Region Stockholm has presented a new forecast for the Stockholm Metro expansion. The final cost is estimated at SEK 99.8 billion, with several opening dates postponed.
Detailed description
The administration responsible for Stockholm's expanded Metro has carried out a comprehensive review during 2026 of costs, schedules and remaining works across all projects within the Stockholm Metro expansion.
The updated forecast estimates the total final cost at SEK 99.8 billion in current prices, which is SEK 22.9 billion above existing financing and previous decisions. The new forecast also incorporates future risks and a dedicated risk reserve more systematically than previous estimates. Identified project risks total approximately SEK 9.8 billion.
The review has also resulted in revised estimates for when the new Metro sections will open. The Blue Line extension to Barkarby is now estimated to open in the fourth quarter of 2028. The Green Line to Arenastaden is estimated to open in the fourth quarter of 2029. The Blue Line extension to Nacka and southern Stockholm is expected to open in the first quarter of 2032, while the Yellow Line to Älvsjö is currently estimated to begin operations in 2037.
According to Region Stockholm, the higher costs are largely related to longer construction periods, delays in rock excavation contracts, slow progress in certain ongoing contracts, underestimated time required for testing and commissioning, and rising costs in the construction and civil engineering sector.
The Stockholm Metro expansion includes 18 stations, approximately 30 kilometres of new tracks and two depots. The programme includes the Blue Line to Barkarby, Blue Line to Nacka and southern Stockholm, Green Line to Arenastaden and Yellow Line to Älvsjö. Construction is continuing across all projects, while no new financing or revised schedules have yet been formally approved.
